Deryk Poynor

Owner of The Greenhouse 817

Plants taught me so much about communication and connection and I knew this was something I had to share with others.

Meet March’s Fort Worth Woman!

Deryk Poynor is a Fort Worth native who loves to spend her time traveling, crossing National Parks off her to-do list, and cuddling with her rescue fur babies. She and her partner, Joe, are currently looking into an Airstream for their 2019 adventures. A few years ago in 2014, she found inspiration and became the creative mastermind behind The Greenhouse 817.

Becoming a businesswoman was slightly unintentional for Deryk. She found herself feeling as if she was lost. She then began to find herself in the flowers and plants in her own backyard greenhouse. Planting and arranging became her own kind of meditation. Deryk states, “I get to ground myself with not only art but another living being that responds to my emotions and environment. Plants taught me so much about communication and connection and I knew this was something I had to share with others.” Quickly her meditative hobby became popular amongst her friends, family, as well as complete strangers who would find her beautiful work on Instagram. After she received a call from the local Fort Worth restaurant, Righteous Foods, who wanted her to design a large installment that would spread throughout the building, Deryk knew her work was something she could make big. This was her time to jump in with both feet and that is where The Greenhouse 817 was begun-a sprawling 4,500 square foot warehouse filled with beautiful botanicals, modern containers, and thoughtfully executed arrangements.

Deryk feels that she jumped into entrepreneurship at a time where she wasn’t alone. Deryk states, “There’s a really noticeable timeline in the Fort Worth do-ers and makers community where a bunch of folks who weren’t satisfied with the status quo decided to do something about it. I wanted people to have flowers with feelings or plants that made you see and appreciate things you hadn’t before.”

What Deryk loves about Fort Worth is the community of creative entrepreneurs our city has grown in recent years. She loves the support she has received from local business owners, especially other women, and feels that this support, in particular, is what has driven a lot of the success for both her business and her brand.

When asked what her word was for her impact as a businesswoman on our city, Deryk stated nothing less than is fitting for her talent-bold. She states, “from our designs to our personalities and individual style-we’re not everyone’s cup of tea, but we certainly cannot go unnoticed!” The Greenhouse 817 creates arrangements that can fill your home/business on special occasions as well as weekly/monthly delivery! You can find her original location on Bryan Avenue off of Berry but she will soon be opening her new retail-only space at the 4eleven off Main!
